The population within the city limits is 173,618, and is the anchor of the 35th largest metropolitan population in the country, with a metro population of 1,622,520. Today, Providence is the economic, cultural, and political hub of Rhode Island. The city of Providence is geographically very compact characteristic of many eastern seaboard cities.
